I Compared Four Maldives Hotels To See If A DIY Paradise Retreat Could Cost Less Than You'd Expect

Is The Maldives Really As Expensive As We Think?

Mention the Maldives and most people picture overwater villas, infinity pools and expensive, bucket-list style five-star luxury. The Maldives is one of those destinations that's often dismissed as "maybe one day" because of the assumed price tag.

But I started wondering whether that's always true.

Not whether the Maldives is cheap - but whether choosing the right hotel and the right way to book could make the slow, restorative paradise escape you've been dreaming of actually possible.

So I compared four Maldives hotels for the same travel dates in December 2026 using publicly available booking site prices (the one I'm refrencing here is booking.com) alongside member pricing that's available through a travel membership.

Here's what I found...

Upshot: Paradise is possible

I expected to see some savings - I consistently do - but I wasn't expecting to find differences of more than £1,500/$2,000 on several hotels.

Here's how it breaks down for two adults travelling between 1–10 December 2026.

*Booking.com was showing a promotional sale price at the time of comparison. Its usual public price was around £5,211/$7044.

Four Hotels, Four Very Different Outcomes

Although every hotel showed a saving, two really stood out to me.

Season Paradise had the largest difference, with member pricing coming in £1,836/$2482 lower than the publicly available rate!!

Fiyavalhu Resort was almost as impressive.

Even compared with Booking.com's "discounted" promotional price, member pricing was still over £1,500/$2027 less!

Meanwhile, Summer Island offered a saving of £858/$1159, while Niva Karumba still reduced the cost by nearly £500/$675.

Those prices are enough to make a noticeable difference to the overall cost of a Maldives holiday.

Where The Numbers Came From

Now, let's be clear here, access to these prices comes through a travel membership - and the one I researched and drew the comparisons from was Travel Advantage.

What's great about this particular membership is that unlike many subscription services, there doesn't need to be an ongoing monthly cost. At the time of writing, there's a 6-month membership option for a one-off payment of $99/£73, giving you time to compare prices, plan and book any future trips and decide whether it's something you'd actually use longer term.

So if you're looking at booking the Maldives, even with this one off payment, you're still making savings in the hundreds and thousands.

For anyone who travels regularly - or even has one or two bigger holidays planned - it could be worth looking at the numbers travel memberships have. Even if you only matched the kind of savings shown in one of the comparisons above, the membership cost would be small in comparison.

Of course, whether it's worthwhile depends on how often you travel and the trips you're planning, but it's another reminder that publicly available prices aren't always the full story!

Looking Beyond The Price

When I began researching this, I wasn't trying to find the cheapest holiday - my aim was to see whether someone wanting a slower bucket-list trip - with a chance to rest, read, switch off and enjoy beautiful island life - needs to spend a fortune to get that experience.

And it seems not.

Imagine spending your days:

  • watching the sunrise with a coffee, listening to the gentle waves on the shore

  • snorkelling in crystal clear waters straight from the beach

  • getting lost in a book without constantly checking your phone or being interrupted

  • enjoying long sunset dinners overlooking the ocean

  • taking afternoon naps, meditating and journaling without feeling guilty

That's exactly the sort of escape many people are looking for.

The Maldives provides the setting. The prices I found make it possible.

So, Is A DIY Paradise Island Retreat Worth Considering?

I'd say so.

Because if what you're looking for is peace, slower mornings, beautiful surroundings and time to recharge and truly escape in a paradise place like no other, it's absolutely possible.

But, choosing mindfully where you stay - and how you book it - could have a big impact on whether that dream becomes a reality.

Quick Takeaways

  • Four Maldives hotels were compared for the same December 2026 travel dates.

  • Every hotel was cheaper using member pricing.

  • Savings ranged from £473/$639 to £1,836/$2482

  • The largest savings came from Season Paradise and Fiyavalhu Resort.

  • Looking beyond publicly available prices could significantly reduce the cost of a Maldives escape.
