How To Save Thousands On An Autumn New York City Break

New York is one of the most popular autumn city breaks for good reason. By late October, Central Park is filled with gorgeous autumn colors, the weather is ideal for walking, Halloween decorations are everywhere, and it's the perfect time to enjoy Broadway shows, rooftop bars and long weekends exploring the city before winter arrives.

The only downside?

Hotel prices can be eye-watering.

As you likely know by now, I'm a natural born researcher, and one of the things I love looking into is whether travel clubs and travel memberships that offer member pricing can genuinely make a difference to the price of travel and city breaks like this, or whether the savings are simply too small to justify paying for them.

So rather than relying on marketing claims, I decided to compare four well-known Manhattan hotels for exactly the same October weekend using both publicly available prices (in this case booking.com,) and the member pricing available through the travel membership Travel Advantage. For reference, at the time of writing, Travel Advantage membership costs $99 (around £75) for six months' access.

I was curious to find out one thing:

Could a single autumn city break in New York save more than the membership costs?

To make the comparison as fair as possible, I kept everything consistent.

I compared:

The same travel dates (22–25 October 2026)
Two adults sharing
Comparable room types
Public Booking.com prices
Member pricing through Travel Advantage

The hotels were also spread across different parts of Manhattan, giving a broader picture than simply comparing hotels in one neighbourhood.

They included:

Hell's Kitchen
Times Square
Chelsea
Financial District

So, Does The Membership Pay For Itself?

This was the question I really wanted answered.

A Travel Advantage membership currently costs $99 (approximately £75) for six months and the smallest saving I found was $464/£344.

That's more than four times the cost of the membership on a single hotel booking.

The largest saving came from The Wall Street Hotel, where the member price was $1051/£780 lower than the Booking.com price for exactly the same stay.

Of course, this doesn't mean every hotel, or every travel date will produce savings like these. Hotel prices change constantly, and public booking sites regularly run promotions too. But based on this investigation, the prices I saw far outweighs the cost of the membership.

What Stood Out

It wasn't just about the savings - it was about the consistency in prices too.

Every hotel I compared was cheaper using member pricing.

The savings ranged from $463/£344 to $1051/£780, across high quality (4 and 5*) hotels in completely different parts of Manhattan.

Thinking about it another way, a saving of several hundred dollars or pounds could easily cover:

Broadway tickets
Observation deck entry
Meals in some of New York's best neighbourhoods
Airport transfers
Shopping
A large part - if not ALL - of your flight costs

It also reinforced something I keep finding whenever I compare travel prices like these - the first price you see online isn't always the lowest one available.

Most of us automatically check the big booking websites, but there are often other booking routes, member pricing schemes and travel memberships that can provide access to different and better rates - for exactly the same rooms.

That's exactly why I enjoy doing these investigations so much!

Is It Worth It??

Based on these comparisons, I'd say it's worth checking travel member pricing before booking an autumn New York city break like this.

That doesn't mean you should necessarily stop using Booking.com or other public booking sites - they can also offer some great deals and options at times. And they're still excellent tools for researching hotels, reading reviews and comparing locations.

But this investigation shows that they don't always have the best prices for travellers.

And if spending a couple of extra minutes comparing booking options could save several hundred dollars/pounds on one hotel, it seems like time well spent.
