How to Create Your Own Wellness Retreat (Without Spending Thousands)

Wellness retreats are everywhere right now.
Open Instagram or Pinterest and you'll see beautiful hotels, sunrise yoga, healthy breakfasts, blissful spa treatments and women returning home feeling calmer, happier and more themselves.
But alongside all of that inspiration comes a price tag. Many organised retreats can cost thousands per person before you've even booked your flights. And it got me wondering...
Do we actually need someone else to create the perfect retreat for us? Or could we enjoy many of the same benefits simply by choosing the right destination, the right hotel and just giving ourselves permission to slow down?
What Actually Makes A Wellness Retreat Feel So Good?
If you think back to the most relaxing breaks or vacations you've ever had, chances are it wasn't because somebody handed you an itinerary.
It was probably because you finally had space.
Space to think and be still.
Space to sleep.
Space to read a book.
Space to eat slowly.
Space to walk without looking at the time.
When people describe coming home from a wellness retreat feeling refreshed, they're often talking about something much simpler than yoga classes or workshops - they're talking about finally stepping away from everyday life.
The environment helps, of course. Beautiful surroundings, good food, comfortable accommodation and time in nature all make a difference. But perhaps the biggest ingredient is something we rarely give ourselves at home: permission to stop.

You Don't Need A Timetable To Relax
One thing I've noticed when researching retreats is that many have incredibly full schedules.
Sunrise yoga.
Meditation.
Breakfast.
Workshop.
Lunch.
Breathwork.
Another workshop.
Dinner.
Evening circle.
For some people, that's exactly what they're looking for and feel excited about. But for others - me included - it almost sounds exhausting.
One of the biggest advantages of creating your own retreat is that you decide what your days look like. If you want to spend three hours reading beside the pool...do it.
If you fancy sleeping until 10am...nobody's judging. If today's wellness activity is simply sitting on a balcony with a coffee while listening to the birds...perfect.
Sometimes doing less is exactly what our minds need.
Designing Your Own Retreat

Creating your own wellness retreat can be surprisingly simple.
Instead of searching for retreats as a thing, start by searching for destinations that naturally help you slow down. Think boutique hotels, adults-only resorts, Spa hotels, countryside escapes, beachfront apartments and mountain lodges.
Then build your own experience around them.
So you could include things like:
Morning walks before breakfast
A spa treatment
Swimming every day
Reading instead of scrolling
Journalling over coffee
Long lunches without rushing
Sunset walks
Evening meditations and early nights
A complete digital detox for a few hours each day
Notice how none of these require a retreat organiser - they're simply intentional choices.
Planning Your Own Retreat Starts With The Right Place - And Price

If you're thinking about creating your own wellness retreat, the first decision is usually where to stay.
Your hotel, spa resort or apartment becomes the foundation of the whole experience. It influences how relaxed you feel, what facilities you have access to and, of course, how much the trip will cost.
That's why choosing the right place - at the right price - is just as important as deciding what you'll do once you get there. Because when it comes to DIY retreats, finding somewhere that feels peaceful is one thing, but finding somewhere that offers good value and means a wellness break is actually financially do-able, is another.
And that's why I now compare prices across several places before I recommend or book anywhere myself, including a travel membership I've been testing alongside the usual booking websites (you can see which travel membership I'm currently using here).
And what I've consistently found is that a restorative escape doesn't always have to come with a luxury retreat price tag (here's a great example of this where I found $$$ in savings at 3 Portugal spa hotels recently).
Over the coming months, I'll be sharing more destination ideas, hotel comparisons and travel investigations that might help you plan your own DIY wellness retreat - for less - with the hope that it becomes possible - and not just a vision board dream - for you to carve out a little more space to rest, recharge and put yourself first.
